Dog Friendly Beaches Costa Brava

by Debbie

Hi - we are really looking forward to coming to Tamariu for 2 weeks in August. My family plus 2 little dogs. Can you let me know where is a good place to walk the dogs? Are they allowed on at the beaches at all? Thank you.

Hi Debbie

Tamariu is one of my favourite beaches. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on the beach. In fact dogs are not allowed on most of the Costa Brava beaches, particularly in the summer. You can get away with it quite often in the winter because there are not many people about.

Having said that there are at least 2 dog friendly Costa Brava beaches that we know of (even in the summer):

Rubina beach in Empuriabrava

Els Griells beach in L’Estartit

Neither of which are near Tamariu. L’Estartit is the closest at about an hours drive.

BUT, there are plenty of places to walk dogs around Tamariu.

If your dogs are quite sure footed you can walk the Cami de Ronda path that snakes around the headland (a stunning walk). If you are on the beach facing the sea the path is on the far right (obviously, because you have to cross the beach to get to the walk you would have to start the walk early when no one is about or carry the dogs to get to the path). You can also walk the Cami de Ronda in the other direction (towards Aiguablava beach) but you have to walk up through Tamariu on the road to access the path again, at Aigua-Xelida.

There are also various paths in the woods behind Tamariu. If you take Carrer Aiguablava and then continue on to Carrer Cadi you end up on a dirt road in the woods, which you can either stay on or take one of the little paths that lead off it. It will be a cooler place for you to walk in the day time in August.

Have a fabulous time!

Imogen

Again, thanks

And thanks for that advice too Kay. Indeed we did take the dogs to France last year, and our vet in the UK is brilliant, and gave the same advice. So, completely agree that the Scalibor is a must, as well as the other vaccinations that are needed for the pet passport.

Pet Insurance and Dog Leishmaniasis Spain
by: Kay

Just a word of advice for dog owners in Spain.

I have been in Spain a couple of years now and highly advise taking out pet insurance if you live here or are coming here on holiday. When my husband was recently hospitalised with stomach problems the insurance company paid for my dog to go into kennels.

I also recommend getting your dog vaccinated against canine leishmaniasis (a disease transmitted by sandflies) or getting a Scalibor collar to protect them (this also protects against ticks and mosquitos).
