Anniversary Costa Brava - Beach and Hotel Recommendation

by Bryan
(Detroit, MI)

My wife and I will be coming from Barcelona, and want to stop in Costa Brava for one or two nights. Where should we stop? We are heading for Mallorca after.

We are in your early 30's and want beautiful beaches and amazing food.

Which area in the Costa Brava do you suggest that isn't too far from Barcelona and any specific hotel?

Thanks

Hi Bryan

Thanks for getting in touch.

First of all, happy anniversary!

I think one night on the Costa Brava isn’t enough, so make it at least two nights. That way you get a day there to enjoy it.

To give you a good taste of the Costa Brava, I think I would suggest Calella de Palafrugell or Llafranc for your anniversary. Both of these villages are relatively easy to get to and give you a good choice of restaurants, beaches and a village to wander around.

I say relatively easy to get to, because it depends on how you plan on getting there. They are about 1½ hours drive by taxi from Barcelona. If you come by bus it will take 3 hours to reach Palafrugell and then you have to get another bus for the last 20 minutes of the journey. If you come by train the nearest station is 25km away and you will need to get a taxi from there.

I really do think this part of the Costa Brava is worth the trek though. The coast here is rugged and beautiful, the beaches and villages are smaller and more romantic (perhaps I am biased).

Calella is a pretty village with 7 small sandy beaches. There is a fabulously located hotel here, Hotel Sant Roc - it’s right on the beach and has amazing views of the village and the beaches.

Llafranc is next door to Calella (in fact there is a stunning walk between the two, that only takes about 20 minutes). Llafranc is another pretty village and has one beach. There is an amazing hotel here... Hotel El Far De Sant Sebastia - perched high on a cliff above Llafranc with amazing views of the coastline (but it’s a 30 minute walk down the hill to the beach and the village). For a hotel nearer to the beach and village take a look at Hotel Blau Mar Llafranc - the infinity pool alone makes this hotel awesome.

Hope you have a great anniversary. It certainly sounds like a fantastic way to spend it!

Imogen

I would definitely stay at Hotel El Far if you can afford it. It's fabulous!
